Introduction to "Fasting for the Healthy"

by Waltraud Bittner

What is Fasting?

  • No solid food. The faster only consumes liquids. (Vegetable broths, fruit and vegetable juices, teas and water.)
  • No stimulants. Renunciation of alcohol, nicotine, coffee and sugar.
  • Voluntarily and on one's own responsibility. Free will, since the psychological component is important.

Fasting is the renunciation of solid foods and stimulants – voluntarily and for a limited time.

Fasting is not:

  • Hungering. Hungering is the involuntary removal of food.
  • Special diet. Whoever eats fish on a Friday or renounces meat before Easter is not fasting, but is merely partaking in a special diet.
  • Dieting. Eating calorie-reduced meals or carrying out a diet is not fasting.

"Whoever hungers, doesn't fast – Whoever fasts, doesn't hunger!"
